gifts of the harvest goddess–beauty & loss

On Thursday, September 6 when Saturn Stations Direct, Ceres will be transiting into Libra, the sign of love, beauty, partnerships, balance, and fairness.

And what, pray tell, is Ceres? Or rather, who?

Ceres is either the largest and first asteroid discovered (on the auspicious 1-1-1801) or a dwarf planet such as is Pluto.  When we are looking at love & romance & sex and & passion in your chart, one of the celestial bodies that is analyzed is Ceres, along with your 5, 7, and 8th houses, Venus, and several asteroids, if you’re a Modern Astrologer, as Traditional ones usually do not consider them. (I’m actually more Traditional, but do love the asteroids)

ceres god and goddessesIn case you have gaps in your mythological knowledge… as I do….. the Goddess Ceres is the epitome of motherhood and nurturing. She can be compared in a similar way to Cancer, the Mother of the Zodiac,  in regard to the love,  bliss, and fulfillment she finds in motherhood.  Ceres was married to Jupiter, and despite his beautiful benevolence, after their beloved daughter Persephone was abducted by Pluto and dragged into the Underworld, Circe’s trademark hope was devastated and her sadness and grieving could not be contained at the loss of her beloved daughter. As the Harvest Goddess, in her pain, the crops failed to do so. ceres drawing use this

Jupiter went into action for both his daughter and his wife and yadda yadda yadda, a deal was worked out with Pluto, resulting in  Persephone being given permission to live six months of the year above in  the land of the living with her mother, Ceres,  and living then the other six months  underground in the land of the dead partnered to her husband, Pluto,  the Lord of the Underworld.  Once again, Ceres was filled with her unrelenting optimism and hope. The Harvest was plentiful.

There are so many things about Ceres and Persephone’s story that resonates with women  in 2018. . . . a woman bound to production that will be the literal food. Because a man . abused and kidnapped her daughter, she feel into a depression that resulted in possible starvation. The man however, while he threw mom a bone, still got off pretty scott free, remained a Lord, and still got his young and stolen bride in his Hot Topic like lair for six months out of the year. Ceres was dependent on the man who harmed her child to not only find hope, but to provide the food that somehow women ended up being in charge of……… Persephone was bartered like a pawn. Ceres had to compromise with a crdiminal….. This certainly did not happen while Ceres was in Libra. Anyway.

ceres glyph In our natal charts, Ceres is closely related to the ultimate symbol of motherhood, the Zodiac sign Cancer. While Cancer is the intuitive all nurturing mother who rises from the sea,  Ceres is the Earth Mother. She is things grounded–food, agriculture, nurturing, motherhood, family relationships, the harvest. She is the transitioning of the female due to her own transitioning journey in response to and caused by Pluto…. She is that which we find nurturing and where  in our lives we can easily provide love and nurturning. She is physicality and things material.

What does it mean to us as a collective that she wil be visiting Libra?

Libra is symbolized by the scales–balance, fairness, judgment in a legal system that is actually based on truth and righteousness. She is partnership. Libra loves to be mated. She is, in that regard, yin and yang, night and day, black and white, woman and man–the energetic force in the universe that keeps all equal. Give a little bit, give a little bit of your love to me & I’ll givwe a little bit, give a little bit of my love to you….

Venus is the planetary ruler of Libra. Venus, who is love and beauty. She is the .Divine Feminine that isn’t only about women–both men and women contain the Divine Femine and the Divine Masculine. We too are in balance.

ceres . So in a few hours Ceres will transit into Libra. Collectively our desire to . nurture and care for others will move into the house of fairness and love. She will travel through Venus until November 12 when she will then glide into Scorpio for some mysterious, secretive, sexy fun or it’s flip side… stay tuned in.

While in Libra, we could feel the area of life that our Libra reigns in our chart. If, for instance, Libra rules your 7th house–The House of Marriage–and other Committed Partnerships–you might find that your beloved decides to pop the question in a dreamy romantic proposal or you may suddenly find that you have a strong need or necessity to nurture your partner…. you may realizer your baby clock has ticked long enough and it’s time to go for it (remember, in retrograde make plans… take actions after it stations direct). You might decide to start a business partnership that is fair, balanced, and where the two of you will be in harmony or meet someone that you know is the one.  If in 4th, house of home and foundation,  you might have a pull toward beautifying your home or planting a garden; find yourself nesting. . In the 8th of transition, you may decide it’s time for a new look, a new skincare regime, or even taking turns exploring your fantasies with your partner adding balace to your relationship. You get the idea.

One possible result of this transit……wherever this transit touches your life you can expect beautification,  balance, and/or harmony. What a lovely way to welcome the Autumn. As during part of this transit, Venus will be in retrograde, you may see where your natal or transiting Venus, as she is Libra’s ruler,  is residing is feeling this transit, while doing what planets do in retrograde….. slowing down and asking you to be reflective in this area of your life. Asking  you to determine what is not fulfilling  you in this area. How can you add pleasure to your life?  What will delight you? How do you nurture here? What are  you harveting? Is it what is that which is beauty to you? Does it enrich your life?  Where is it  you need to be nurtured and are not? How can you nurture yourself if  you find yourself partnerless?  And what constitutes a partner? Must they be romantic? Can it be a friend, your child, your cat,  your sister?

How nice that while Venus slows to a backwards waltz and when relationship issues might feel the effects,  that Ceres might make it possible that we may find we enjoy this slowing reflective period after all rather than being stuck in the quicksand of the summer?

ceres ice volcano
On Ceres there is a mountain made of ice. #ceres #icevolcano #mountainonceres #asteroidceres #ceresinlibratransit

However….. there is another side to Ceres.

Like the mountain of ice that lives on her surface, Ceres is about the coldness of loss and grief and having to let go, findally errupting into that which you can no longer control. The result of this can surface in depression.  And the letting go or reflection that results could be of a very different animal.

I think back to the summer and retrograding Mars striking the Nodes of Fate– of letting go of what no longer serves you on your path…. and  in June, Anthony Bourdain and Kate Spade did just that–they let go of life itself.

In August as Mars stationed direct and began his third trek across the same path of sky,  we lost (both to known terminal Cancer) two legends–Aretha Franklin and John McCain. As we spent this summer slowing down and reflecting while we went through three eclipses and questioned  our life path and are we on the right on? Are we on one at all?those who were in need of letting go did that,  despite the incredible glamorous lives we witnessed them livng. Two who were in what many consider their prime, with young children left behind at the begimning of the Mars’ angry trek; then two who had lived fully and were  at the end of their lives, legends the world had needed who changed it in ways we cannot fully comprehend, at the end of the trek, the end of this long, hot summer.

My point is that the cosmos does not play around. If it’s time for change, elements will line up to create it. During . this transit that could result in something nurturing and beautiful or could result in grief and loss, make certain that you are taking care of each other. While depression can be found in the natal chart of thoe who are inflicted with it, generally speaking, a transit will not create depression. It is already present, while sometimes only obvious to those the very closest or perhaps for some,  not at all.

Let this be your time to nurture as Ceres nurtured Penelope. Pay attention to those in your life–all of those in your life, your family and friends and work friends. Those you see and have wondered if they were struggling.  Those you know are and don’t always know what to say. Check on those who are blue. Those who have experienced loss. Those who are alone. in the season of partners and balance, many of us have trouble making peace to coming home to a quiet apartment.  Consider those who have recently divorced or broken up…. or those whose children have left the nest.

To be kind, thoughtful, considerate, giving…..

Let this be The Harvest Goddess’ gift of love. The lesson we have all learned on our Summer Vacations.

I can think of no song that captures this transit more perfectly.   Press play and play it LOUD, like you mean it.

(What’s so Funny Bout) Peace, Love, & Understanding performed by a very young Elvis Costello

As I walk through
This wicked world
Searchin’ for light in the darkness of insanity
I ask myself
Is all hope lost?
Is there only pain and hatred, and misery?
And each time I feel like this inside
There’s one thing I wanna know:
What’s so funny ’bout peace love and understanding? Ohhhh
What’s so funny ’bout peace love and understanding?
And as I walked on
Through troubled times
My spirit gets so downhearted sometimes
So where are the strong
And who are the trusted?
And where is the harmony?
Sweet harmony
‘Cause each time I feel it slippin’ away, just makes me wanna cry
What’s so funny ’bout peace love and understanding? Ohhhh
What’s so funny ’bout peace love and understanding?
